Wait, So what exactly do these do/where do they fit in?

They are datacenters where Google keeps copies of the index. You can search them by going to an IP address instead of to google.com. You can often see different serps on different datacenters. It can be useful when changes to the index are being made as it takes time for a new index to be put on all datacenters, so you can often see in advance what you new rankings are likely to be.

That was how the datacenters used to be used. But since Google doesn't do monthly updates, they are most useful for checking new PageRanks during a PageRank/backlinks update.

Well, if people come and look here, I'd better comment on it:-

The article's author wasn't very clear about datacenters, so I'll explain more.

Google has quite a few seperate datacenters (DCs), each of which contain the entire index and the entire algorithms. To all intents and purposes, they are independant of each other. They don't all contain indentical indexes, and they don't all contain identical algorithms (programmes that do the rankings). It means that they often produce different results to each other.

When you do a search, you get the results from whatever datacenter Google chooses at that time. Unless you search a specific DC's IP address, Google chooses the DC to return the results from, and they choose it with every search you make, including when you click to get the next page of results. It's not uncommon for the next page of results to be provided by a different DC than the previous page of results.

The author was surprised by the different results that he and his client found, because their locations were quite close, and he seems to have assumed that, because of their close proximity, they ought to be receiving the results from the same DC. But that doesn't necessarily happen. I've come across people in the same office receiving the results from different DCs.

There are some technical reasons why Google sometimes switches DCs between one page of results and the next, and why people in close proximity sometimes don't get the results from the same DC, but there's no need to get technical here, as this is just some additional information about DCs (datacenters).

Interesting to note about datacanters throwing up different results despite people being in close proximity.

I run a business in the UK and we have noticed sales patterns being very geographically linked. Currently, we're getting orders from the London and Surrey areas. Can anyone substantiate this, or is it just a repeated coincidence that has been occuring for months?

Does your site have anything on the page that has those city words? Anything about those cities in the meta tags? Perhaps someone ordered something from your site and liked it, and is telling their friends in their area about your site?

This is the bizarre thing. I tend to ask the customer where they've seen us without prying, but given the high value of the products we sell (heated towel rails), if people have decided to buy after a refferal, they tend to drop this in and ask for some discount.

We don't have any city or town references. This is something I have avoided as I feel its a little too 'black hat' and I've made a point of taking the high ground regarding seo.
